Basingstoke is the largest town in Hampshire that is not officially designated as a city. It is situated in south central England, and lies across a valley at the source of the River Loddon. It is located 30 mi northeast of Southampton, 48 mi southwest of London, and 19 mi northeast of the county town and former capital Winchester.
