Velingrad, Bulgaria(opens in a new window)

Velingrad is a town in Pazardzhik Province, Southern Bulgaria, located at the western end of Chepino Valley, part of the Rhodope Mountains. It is the administrative center of the homonymous Velingrad Municipality and one of the most popular Bulgarian balneological resorts. The town has a population of 22,602 inhabitants according to the 2011 census of Velingrad.

Dorkovo Museum(Opens in a new window)

Dorkovo Museum in Dorkovo, Bulgaria, established in 2013 in a domed wooden structure, has a display of fossils collected from the Pliocene geological epoch of about five million years ago around the village of Dorkovo, a life-size model of a gomphothere, related to elephants, and a diorama.

Tsepina (Bulgarian: Цепина) was a castle and town in the western Rhodope mountains, southern Bulgaria, now in ruins. It is 6 km from the Dorkovo village in the north-eastern part of the Chepinska valley. Tsepina is 317 m above sea level.

Belmeken Dam(Opens in a new window)

The Belmeken (Bulgarian: Белмекен) dam is situated in the Rila Mountains and is the highest dam lake on the Balkan peninsula. There is a pumped-storage plant built on the lake (PSP) (Bulgarian: ПАВЕЦ). It is part of the cascade Belmeken-Chaira-Sestrimo. Part of the water used in the PSP is returned by its pumps, while the rest is sent through tunnels in the Sestriomo WPP (Water Power Plant). From there it flows again through tunnels to the third and last dam with Chaira PSP. The construction of a fourth dam, Iadenitsa, is in progress and will be finished in the coming years.

Chaira Hydro Power Plant(Opens in a new window)

The Chaira Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant (Chaira PSHPP) was built in the Rila mountains, about 100 km southeast of the capital city, Sofia. Chaira has generating capacity of 864 MW and a pumping capacity of 788 MW, and is thus the largest pumped-storage plant in southeast Europe. The power plant is equipped with four reversible Francis pump-turbines, each rated at 216 MW in the generating mode, and 197 MW in pumping mode. Units 1 and 2 have been in operation since 1995, and that time Chaira was the highest head in the world for a single-stage pump turbine (690 m generating and 701 m pumping). Units 3 and 4 came online in 1999. The pump-turbines and motor-generators were supplied by Toshiba, and three of them were manufactured under Japanese supervision in Bulgaria. The upper compensating basin for Chaira is the Belmeken reservoir that is connected to the Chaira pumped storage hydro power plant by two headrace tunnels with a diameter of 4.2 m and two penstocks with diameter 4.4 m, reducing to 4.2 m.
