Otočec Castle(Opens in a new window)

Otočec Castle is a castle hotel on a small island in the middle of the Krka River in Otočec, Slovenia. It is the only water castle in Slovenia. The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century, although the walls are said to date to the more precise date of 1252. It was once owned by Ivan Lenković, the chief commander of the Croatia-Slavonia march. The writer Ivan Tavčar set two of his novels at the castle, Otok and Struga and Janez Sonce. The islet is linked to both banks of the river by bridges and the castle has now been converted into a small hotel. Bradt Travel Guides calls it "one of the most famous hotels in Slovenia."

The Žumberak Mountains (Croatian: Žumberačka Gora, Slovenian: Žumberška gora, historic German name: Uskokengebirge) is a range of hills and mountains in northwestern Croatia and southeastern Slovenia, extending from the southwest to the northeast between the Krka and the Kupa. It covers an area of 430 km2. The geographically unified massif consists of two parts, separated by the Bregana River and Žumberak River (Croatian: Žumberačka rijeka). The northeastern part is the Samobor Hills (Croatian: Samoborsko gorje) with the foothills. The central and western part is named Žumberak Hills (Croatian: Žumberačko gorje, Žumberak). Its northwesternmost part, named Gorjanci, lies in Slovenia. The highest peak of the range is Sveta Gera (Trdinov vrh) on the border between Croatia and Slovenia, being 1178 m high. Since 1999, an area of the range in Croatia has been protected as the nature park Žumberak–Samobor Hills.

The Temenica is a river of Slovenia. The river goes underground twice. Its surface length is 27 km, and its subterranean length is 1.75 km measured in a straight line. It is the largest tributary of the Krka, joining it as the Prečna.
