Chitral is a city situated on the Chitral River in northern area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It serves as the capital of the Lower Chitral District, and was previously the capital of Chitral District, and before that the capital of Chitral princely state. The region was encompassed into West Pakistan between the years 1969 and 1972. It has a population of 49,780 per the 2017 census.

Chitral National Park is one of the National Parks of Pakistan. It is located in Chitral District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan beside the Chitral River, at a distance of two hours drive from Chitral town. The park is also known as Chitral Gol National Park.

Golen Gol Hydropower Plant (GGHPP) is an under construction hydroelectric generation project located on Golen Gol River, a major left tributary of Mastuj River in Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan about 380 kilometers from Islamabad, about 25 km from Chitral city and about 365 km from provincial capital Peshawar. The Mastuj River is a tributary of the Kabul River. The construction of Golen Gol project began in 1996.
