Varkala is a commercial, industrial and tourism centre in the Thiruvananthapuram district, situated in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the northern suburb of Trivandrum City. Varkala is also a taluk headquarters. In 2019, Varkala Beach was selected as the second most stunning cliff beach in the world. It is located 36 kilometres north of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), which is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Kerala, 15 km northwest of Attingal town and 28 km south of Kollam City. Varkala consist of Varkala municipality and the 7 panchayats of Edava, Elakamon, Vettoor, Madavoor, Navaikulam, Pallickal, and Chemmaruthy, which is managed by the development authority called Vision Varkala Infrastructure Development Corporation. The corporation has implemented various types of projects such as public-private partnership, joint-venture, private, and public, by mobilizing funds from the government, financial institutions, etc. It is a fully government-owned company formed under the Department of Planning & Economic Affairs.
