About New Cairo

New Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة الجديدة al-Qāhira al-Jadīda, in local dialect el-Qāhera el-Gedīda) is a city covering an area of about 70000 acre on the southeastern edge of Cairo Governorate, 25 kilometres (15 mi) from Maadi. New Cairo is one of the new cities which have been built in and around Cairo to alleviate the congestion in downtown Cairo. It was established in the year 2000 by presidential decree number 191.
