Randfontein is a gold mining town in the West Rand, Gauteng, South Africa, 40 km west of Johannesburg. With the Witwatersrand gold rush in full swing, mining financier JB Robinson bought the farm Randfontein and, in 1889, floated the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. The town was established in 1890 to serve the new mine and was administered by Krugersdorp until it became a municipality in 1929. Apart from having the largest stamp mill in the world, Randfontein, like many of the other outlying areas of Johannesburg, is essentially a rural collection of farms and small holdings in a particularly beautiful part of Gauteng.

The Nelson Mandela National Museum, commonly referred to as Mandela House, is the house on Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. It is located at number 8115, at the corner of Vilakazi and Ngakane streets, a short distance up the road from Tutu House, the home of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Hector Pieterson Museum(Opens in a new window)

The Hector Pieterson Museum is a large museum located in Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, two blocks away from where Hector Pieterson was shot and killed. The museum is named in his honour. It became one of the first museums in Soweto when it opened on 16 June 2002. A companion museum nearby is Mandela House, the former home of Nelson Mandela and his family, which has been run as a museum since 1997.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden(Opens in a new window)

The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (previously known as the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden) is a 300 ha botanical reserve in Roodepoort near Johannesburg. Formally established in 1982, it is one of the youngest of South Africa's National Botanical Gardens, but the site where it is located has been popular with visitors for many decades before that. The garden is home to a well known pair of Verreaux's eagles that nest in the Roodekrans ridge which intersects the reserve. The garden has a restaurant, gift shop and nursery which sells South African native plants (the nursery closed March 2015). The Garden has been recognized as one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.

Krugersdorp Game Reserve(Opens in a new window)

Krugersdorp Game Reserve is a 1500 Ha Game Reserve, located near the town of Krugersdorp, approximately 40 minutes drive from central Johannesburg. It is a "small, intimate reserve that offers visitors a true African safari experience.... without the hassle of travelling to a major reserve houses 15 mammal species, including one of the “Big Five”, while lions are kept in a special 100ha enclosure in the middle of the reserve. The reserve is also popular for bird watching, and more than 200 species that have been recorded there; Guests can travel the park in vehicles or on horseback.
