Ngurdoto Crater in the south-east is grassland. The shallow alkaline Momella Lakes in the north-east have varying algal colours and are known for their wading birds.

It was unveiled in 1977 by the nation's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party to commemorate ten years of the Arusha Declaration. It lies along Makongoro Road at the centre of the roundabout.
