Sokcho (Korean: 속초; ) is a city located in the northeast of Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is a major tourist hub, and a popular gateway to nearby Seoraksan national park. Sokcho is home to two lakes, Yeongrangho and Cheongchoho, that are naturally created by the East Sea. It was under North Korean control from 1945 to 1950, before being captured by the South Korean army on August 18, 1951.

Seoraksan National Park (Korean: 설악산국립공원, 雪嶽山國立公園; RR: seoraksan-gungnipgong-won) is a national park in South Korea. It listed by the South Korean government with UNESCO as a tentative World Heritage site. The government designated the area as a nature reserve in 1965 and UNESCO designated it as a biosphere reserve in 1982. It was also the first Korean national park to be named under the National Park Law in 1970. Located on the east-central Korean peninsula, the reserve includes Injegun, Yanyanggun, and Sokchosi. It is popular with tourists and nature enthusiasts. It is home to many rare taxa of flora and fauna.

Yangyang Pumped Storage Power Station(Opens in a new window)

The Yangyang Pumped Storage Power Station uses the water of the Namdae-Chun River to operate a 1000 MW pumped storage hydroelectric power scheme, about 10 km west of Yangyang in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The lower reservoir is created by the Yangyang Dam on the Namdae and the upper reservoir by the Inje Dam is located 937 m above the power plant. Construction on the power plant began in 1996 and it was completed and dedicated on September 13, 2006. It is operated by Korean Midland Power Co., a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Company and was completed at a cost of ₩1.1 trillion won (US$1.4 billion). The first generator was operational on February 23, 2006 and the last August 10, 2006.
