Steenbergen, Netherlands(opens in a new window)

Steenbergen is a municipality and a town in the province of North Brabant in the south of the Netherlands. The municipality had a population of in and covers an area of km2 of which km2 is water. The municipality is mainly agricultural including a strongly growing greenhouse sector, but Steenbergen and the nearby town of Dinteloord also contain some light industry. A new stretch of A4 motorway under construction is expected to further increase the municipality's attractiveness, allowing easy connections with the large cities of Rotterdam to the north and the Belgian city of Antwerp to the south. The connection with the nearby city of Bergen op Zoom will also be improved as a result.

Things to do in Steenbergen

Fort de Roovere(Opens in a new window)

Fort De Roovere is an entrenchment near Halsteren (by the Schansbaan/Ligneweg (streets) that was part of the West Brabant Dutch Water Line. It is an earthen fort that goes through a wall (the Ligneweg) and is connected to Fort Pinssen. The fort is open from the ‘back’, and the ‘front’ consists of two bastions. The fort has a dry moat and the banks are overgrown with trees. In 1747, during the Austrian War of Succession (1740–1748) the fort was under siege by the French. This siege has been extensively documented. Eventually, the fortress Bergen op Zoom fell and the siege was abandoned.

Philipsdam is a dam that belongs to the Delta Works in the Netherlands. It separates water of the lakes Krammer and Volkerak from the Oosterschelde. This dam connects the Grevelingendam to Sint Philipsland.

Watersnoodmuseum(Opens in a new window)

The Watersnoodmuseum (or Flood Museum) in Ouwerkerk, the Netherlands, is the "National Knowledge and Remembrance Centre for the Floods of 1953" and offers an in-depth picture of the events during and after the flood of 1 February 1953. The museum was officially opened on 2 April 2001. The museum also educates visitors about water safety, and the museum collects global knowledge about flooding.

The Arboretum Kalmthout is a botanical garden in Kalmthout, Belgium. It was started as a tree plantation by Charles Van Geert in 1857. In 1986 it became property of the Antwerp province and is now open to public.
