What do all the ticket types mean? Which are the best ones?
We currently offer four major types of Trenitalia fares: Super Economy, Economy, Base and Ordinary. Each fare type offers the freedom to travel your way – see the below details to find out which best suits your needs.
High-Speed Trains (InterCity and Le Frecce)
Super Economy Fares are the least-expensive fares and cannot be modified or cancelled. These tickets are only available to purchase in advance (up to midnight at least 2 days prior departure), and are subject to limited availability.
Economy tickets are discounted fares that are non-refundable. The ticket permits one date/time change to be made at a Trenitalia station before departure subject to a fee. The route or the category of train cannot be amended.
Base tickets are full-price fares and are ideal for passengers that need a little more flexibility. These tickets can be cancelled before departure with a 20% cancellation fee. The ticket can also be exchanged free of charge before departure at a Trenitalia ticket counter at any station. Up to one hour after departure, this ticket can be changed once at the departure station ticket office only.
When purchased online, this ticket comes validated for the date and time chosen, but is also valid for up to four hours. One date/time change can be made at a Trenitalia station up until the day before the original date of departure subject to a fee. The route or the category of train cannot be amended. Tickets over €10 can be refunded at the Trenitalia ticket counter subject to a 20% fee, only up until the day before the original date of departure.
