General Information And Special Discounts

How far in advance can I book my Amtrak ticket?

You can book Amtrak tickets up to 11 months in advance.

How can I find the cheapest ticket for my journey?

Reserve early! The earlier you book your tickets, the more chance you will have of securing the lowest fare. Amtrak tickets are available up to 11 months in advance.

Fares vary depending on the date and time of travel, and trains tend to sell out quickly during peak season and holidays. So, try and be flexible if you’re looking for the best deal.

Can I book the ticket for someone else to collect?

Absolutely! One of the great things about Amtrak is that you can choose to receive an eTicket for almost all routes. You can then easily email the eTicket direct to the traveller.

For the very few routes that do not offer eTickets, the passenger can easily collect their ticket from an Amtrak station either using a ticket vending machine or visiting the station ticket office. The passenger does not require the credit card used from the original ticket purchase.

Can we pre-allocate our seats on Amtrak?

This entirely depends on whether you are booking a seat or sleeping accommodation. To summarise the answer, we are not able to offer the choice of specific seats from a seating plan because the rail operators do not currently offer this functionality. Once you make a reservation, your Amtrak e-ticket will display one of the following seating options:

Reserved Seat

You are guaranteed a seat on your chosen train but a seat number is not assigned. You simply get on the train, find a seat, and stow your luggage. Occasionally, an Amtrak staff member will direct you to particular cars (carriages) depending on your destination.

Unreserved Seat

Only a few short-distance trains have unreserved seating, where tickets are valid on any train unless restricted by the fare paid. While seating is not guaranteed, unreserved seats have most of the same features as reserved coach seats.

Roomette/Bedroom

These sleeping accommodations are assigned by Amtrak at the time of booking and your specific room number will be displayed on your e-ticket.

What are my baggage restrictions onboard the train?

Basically, each passenger may bring the following items onboard:

*Two large items, 50 lbs (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches, and;

*Two smaller items at 25 lbs (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches.

For full details on additional baggage services, please visit the Amtrak Baggage Info & Service page: https://www.amtrak.com/baggage-policy

What happens if I need wheelchair access?

Most trains can accommodate wheelchairs in Coach, Business Class and First Class carriages, but you should check ahead with Amtrak, and if available book a space in advance. For additional details, please visit the Amtrak Accessible Travel Services page: https://www.amtrak.com/accessible-travel-services

Can I travel with my service animal or pet?

Amtrak happily welcomes service animals, as well as a restricted number of small pet dogs and cats in coach class at a cost of USD25 for trips of up to seven hours on most routes. However, additional restrictions apply.

If you have already booked your Amtrak ticket through Rome2rio and wish to travel with your service animal/dog/cat, please contact Amtrak directly to check availability and make a pet reservation. Their contact details can be found here: https://www.amtrak.com/contact-us
